During World War II, 1943, it was not Soviet union.... but Russia! Only after the war did the Soviet Union become. Hungarians, as ally of Germany, went against the Russians. So they were there, they were doing orders.
It was self-defense... a preemptive kinetic action, as they say it today.
Alas, it did not end well...
