The Monastery of Gračanica was built by Sv. King Milutin in 1310 and dedicated himself to the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos. The monastery is located in the village of Gračanica, 5 km. away from Pristina. The time of the 14th and 15th centuries was a period of great spiritual glory of the monastery. There were hundreds of monks living in Gračanica who had developed a very intense spiritual and artistic activity. In the second quarter of the 16th century there was also the center of the New Town Metropolitan who brought the first printing house to the monastery. Later, due to the great Turkish zulum, the monastery was abandoned and the church was used for parish needs. After the Second World War, the monastery was rebuilt by the monk and since then it has served as a female monastery. Today, there are 20 such sisters who deal with iconography, connection, agriculture and other monastic listings.
After the war in Kosovo and Metohija in 1999, the headquarters of the bishop of Raska-Prizren, who had to leave Prizren, was transferred to the Gracanica Monastery. The monastery became not only a spiritual but also a national and political center of the Serbian people of this region. It organizes numerous meetings and meetings with international representatives on a daily basis in order to ensure the survival and life of the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija.
The Church of the Gračanica Monastery is a building with five cubits with the basis of the inscribed cross, and as such belongs to the group of first cl architectural achievements of its time. Outside was built at the end of the 14th century at the time of Sv. Prince Lazarus. In the 16th century, it was painted with frescoes. Mihailo and Eutychius, famous painters from Thessaloniki, finished the frescoes in the main church until 1321. The heavenly liturgies, prophets and evangelists are painted on the main dome under the fresco of Christ the Pantocrator, while on the walls of the naos might see the cycles of the Great Feasts, the suffering of Christ, Christ's Birth and Resurrection, scenes from the life of the Virgin, Sv. Nikola and Calendar of Saints. The portraits of the Eucharist and the Old Testament motifs are in the altar. Sv. King Milutin and his wife, Simonida, the Byzantine princess, were portrayed in the central port as rulers whom the Lord gave power over angels who lower their crowns on their heads. The Nemanjić Tree of Origin and the Terrible Court are painted in the front of the naos, while outside the preserved preserved fragments of frescoes from the 14th century. In addition to other frescoes, the cycles of the Universiade Sabores, the Akatista of the Blessed Virgin and the Birth of the Lord are significant. On the walls of this church, portraits of the Serbian archbishop and patriarch can also be found, as well as the funeral scene of the Gracanic metropolitan Dionisi. The Gračanica treasure trove was destroyed in the fires of 1379 and 1383. A collection of old icons is still preserved in the monastery, among which is the icon of Christ of Mercy from the 14th century, which is unique in its dimensions (269 cm x 139 cm). So far, several monuments of construction and painting conservation have been made at the monastery.
