Yes — Bilal ibn Rabah رضي الله عنه, one of the most beloved companions in Islam, is remembered as the man whose voice called the first Muslims to prayer, and the man who chose faith even when it meant torture.

Bilal رضي الله عنه was not born into power, wealth, or respect. He was born into slavery in Mecca. In the society he lived in, slaves had almost no rights. They were treated as property. They could be beaten, starved, or punished without consequence. But Allah subhanehu ve teala had written a different des for him — a des of honor, dignity, and eternal respect in the hearts of Muslims.

Bilal رضي الله عنه was originally from Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia 🇪🇹). He was known for his calm nature, honesty, and strength of character even before Islam. When Islam first began spreading quietly in Mecca, he heard about the message of one God — Allah azze ve celle — and the message of Rasulullah aleyhisselam. Something in his heart immediately recognized the truth.

For someone new to Islam, this is important to understand: many of the greatest companions were not powerful leaders at first. They were ordinary people whose hearts were sincere.

How He Became Muslim: Bilal رضي الله عنه accepted Islam in the very early days. But because he was a slave, this decision was extremely dangerous. His master, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, was strongly against Islam.

When he found out Bilal رضي الله عنه had become Muslim, he tortured him brutally.

He would:
Drag him into the desert heat
Lay him on burning sand
Place a huge rock on his chest
Whip him
Starve him

And while this was happening, Bilal رضي الله عنه repeated only one sentence:
“Ahad… Ahad…”
(One… One…)

Meaning: Allah is One.

Imagine this. No army. No protection. No status. Just a man, under torture, choosing Allah subhanehu ve teala over his own life.

His Fre: When Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه saw what was happening, he bought Bilal رضي الله عنه and freed him.

This moment shows one of the beautiful sides of Islam:
Islam broke social barriers.

Slave and master became brothers.
Bilal رضي الله عنه went from being owned…
To becoming one of the most honored Muslims.

His Love for Rasulullah aleyhisselam: Bilal رضي الله عنه loved Rasulullah aleyhisselam deeply.

When Muslims migrated to Medina, Bilal رضي الله عنه went with them. There, Rasulullah aleyhisselam chose him for something incredibly special:

He became the first Muadhin in Islam — the first person to call the Adhan.
Imagine the honor. The first voice in history to publicly call:

Come to prayer.
Come to success.

Every Adhan you hear today has a connection to Bilal رضي الله عنه.

His Special Place in Islam: Rasulullah aleyhisselam once told him that he heard Bilal’s footsteps in Paradise.

Think about that. While still alive, he was given glad tidings of Jannah.

Not because he was rich.

Not because he was powerful.

But because of sincerity, sacrifice, and faith in Allah azze ve celle.

His Life After Rasulullah aleyhisselam: After Rasulullah aleyhisselam ped away, Bilal رضي الله عنه was heartbroken. Calling the Adhan in Medina without the Prophet there was too painful for him.

He eventually moved to Sham (Syria region 🇸🇾). But once, when he visited Medina again and gave the Adhan, people cried remembering Rasulullah aleyhisselam.

His voice carried memories of the earliest days of Islam.

So, you who read here, you don’t need:

Perfect past
High status
Wealth
Education
Power

Bilal رضي الله عنه had none of these at first.
But he had:

Sincerity
Courage
Love for Allah subhanehu ve teala
Love for Rasulullah aleyhisselam
And that made him unforgettable in Islamic history.

Final Message: Remember this:

The man who was once tortured in the desert…
Became the man whose voice called generations to prayer.
Faith is not about where you start.

It is about who you choose to live for.

Mercy.
Faith.
Sacrifice.
Trust in Allah azze ve celle.

This is the path that raised Bilal ibn Rabah رضي الله عنه to greatness.
